The Spring
             by E

Melanie Hamilton sat on the grass. Pumpkin, her kitten, frolicked about, chasing butterflies. Melanie got Pumpkin for her 10th birthday, and loved to play with her. Melanie scooped the orange kitten into her arms.

“Come on, let’s go to the park,” Melanie whispered.

Now, the park she was talking about is not your ordinary park. Wellering Falls State Park had everything from towering mountains to quicksand. Melanie felt like she knew every bump and tree there. But, maybe she didn’t.

Pumpkin let out a mew, and tried to struggle out of Melanie’s arms. “Pumpkin, you can’t walk all the way,” Melanie said. “you’ll have to ride in my bike‘s basket.”

Melanie got her bike out of the garage, and lifted Pumpkin into the basket. The ride wasn’t long, and soon Melanie reached Wellering Falls State Park. Pumpkin in her arms, Melanie started walking through the woods. Pumpkin jumped out of her grasp, and explored the area.

“Pumpkin!” Melanie called, “stay near me!”
Melanie saw Pumpkin trotting towards her. Suddenly, Pumpkin fell through the leaves!

“Pumpkin!” Melanie screamed.

She rushed to the place where the little kitten had fallen through. Melanie saw Pumpkin frantically swimming in a bubbling spring. She lifted the soaked kitten out of the water.

“I wonder why I’ve never noticed that spring before,” she said.

Turning back to Pumpkin, Melanie noticed that the cat was shivering.

“Pumpkin, you’re so cold,” she sighed, relieved that her kitten was safe.

Melanie picked up Pumpkin, and examined the spring. It looked as though someone had purposefully covered it with leaves.

Suddenly, a mysterious bug caught her attention. “I’ve never seen that kind of bug before,” Melanie stated. “I wish I had something to study it with.”

In a flash, a magnifying glass appeared in her hand. “How did that happen?” Melanie cried, dropping the magnifying glass. “I just wish I had a glass of water to clear my head.” A glass of water stood at her feet! “Who’s playing tricks” wondered Melanie, “I’m getting scared!” There was no reply.

“Wait, nothing weird happened until the spring came along,” Melanie mused. “I’m going to do a test.”

“I wish I had 3 billion dollars!” she shouted. Huge sacks of money appeared in her arms.
“Oh my gosh!” Melanie cried. She quickly covered up the spring.

“I wish I had 4 million dollars!” Nothing happened; nothing at all. “It is the spring!” Melanie yelled. “The spring!”

Melanie grabbed Pumpkin and the bags of money. Off they ran to her bike. She put Pumpkin in the basket.

“Come on Pumpkin, let’s go!” she said.

Melanie rode home as fast as she could, and told her story. Not many people believed her, but those that did, wish it were they that found the spring.

Melanie Hamilton and Pumpkin never went back to the spring, nor did they have to.
